Frederick Greenwood was born in 1889 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He eventually settled in Portland, Oregon, and became a prominent banker in the city. He headed the local branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Franicsco in the 1910s, and later became the manager of the Portland branch of the Bank of California. In 1816, the Bank of the United States was rechartered, the first charter having expired in 1811, in an attempt to stabilize the national currency. Within the first three years, the bank was nearly ruined due to mismanagement. Langdon Cheves was elected president of its board of directors in 1819 and restored the bank's credit.
